June 20; bon voyage

Day 136
Today is the day when our real summer begins. I have prepared a few outfits, my medical bag, essential toiletries, 6ish rolls of toilet paper, chargers, important documents, and a few souvenirs for the two month of the backpacking tour of Eastern Asia. (exhausted just thinking about it).

After we said our final goodbyes to some friends and see you later to others, we made our way to the train station. The train ride will take approximately 12-14ish hours. It's not as bad as it sounds because it's an overnight train and we have sleepers, food, and Mean Girls.
along with our personal belongings, we had 3 bags of food.
watching Mean Girls
The lights in the train shut off around 10. Quiet time.

June 19; final supper

Day 135
I finish packing in the morning. Everything that has been with me for the last 6 months has been put away. I'm glad I'm done packing but anxiety looms around me and everything I do. I'm excited to move forward but there's a major part of me that wants to stay and continue the life I have adjusted to.

I visit my great aunt once more before I leave Beijing. She cooks up a wonderful lunch.

doggy that barks a lot.
I come back to the dorm for dinner for the last time. Sig calls it the "last supper" haha.

I was determined to get a fancy room like the last time we came here.
It was definitely the fanciest of all rooms!

great group of friends
gonna miss these guys!
I might have mentioned it before, but in there is literally a hole in the wall. Behind that hole in the wall, is a little Chinese man and a mini convenient store. There are stock shelves with all sorts of convenient store essentials. Really convenient since it's right across the street from us.

We watch The Simpsons (one of the LGBT themed episodes of course) and there ended the final night in which the dysfunctional family would fine dine and spend family tv time together.

June 18; d&d the final round

Day 134

Last week, we were told the processing time of getting a Chinese visa would be 3 hours. It was hard to believe, but hey they know more about the system than we do.  Today, we take a two hour bus ride and wait another 2 hours for our turn in line only to find out that the processing time takes 5 days. Fckng shit are you kidding me right now... We walk away from the fancy bureau with whatever we came in with and nothing more but utter disappointment...
After eating my feelings back at the dorm, I feel a bit better. It’s time for the final game of dungeons and dragons.

The story thus far: The crew must retrieve information about Årkiva in order to claim their reward. After travelling for three days, the crew arrives at their final destination, a deserted wharf town. The story left off after the discovery of a secret passage.

The crew cautiously makes their way down the lightless flight of stairs. With a little help of magic, the area becomes visible and we see three paths. Mance Rayder decides to part ways and as a result we all fell apart. Camino and Godric do not find anything of interest on their path. Anteres and Atticus find a room of dead bodies, and Mance Rayder and Eppy find a swampy area with some fishy looking bad guys. Mance Rayder and Ippy engage in battle with the enemies, but being outnumbered wear them both out.  In critical condition and almost drowning in the swamp, Murdoch (Tom) appears in their chamber to help them out. The sound of combat echoes through the underground and reunites the crew to the swamp chamber.  The battle is won and the crew continues on to the last chamber together. The chamber is occupied by a giant lobster and his seamen. They do not speak English, but one of Anteres’ skill is understanding the language of aquatic. Anteres speaks with them and discovers that something is coming to claim ÅrkivaÅrkiva will soon be swallowed by the sea. Murdoch examines the room and finds a secret door. The chamber holds plenty of valuable items and some pews. At the front of the room lie the missing town folks. The dead folks are bundled together with one man who gasps for breathe. The water begins to rise and the crustacean warns the gang to leave or they will be trapped underwater. The crew leaves the town behind, watching the wet sea cover every trace of the deserted town. As dusk arrives, the gang finds a place to camp out for the night. A spirit approaches them and invites them to check out a clandestine area which holds secrets that may be of value. Murdoch willingly follows the little spirit to a little cave. The spirit reveals himself to be Odo the Trickster. Inside the cave lies a shebear with her two cubs. So much for treasure. They leave the cave and see the Trickster again. This time, Camino follows Odo to an empty cave with inscriptions on the walls. Back at camp, Mance Rayder is heavily asleep.

Back in the real world, it’s late and we call it a night. That ends the final session of D&D in BJ.

Things I will miss about BJ: playing dungeons and dragons

June 12; starting of seasons and closing off the semester

Day 128

My friend gave me a dose of Chef Gordon Ramsay today: the premier episodes of Masterchef AND Hell's Kitchen. Yumm.
As I munch on my mac and cheese (I mistakenly chose the weird sweetened milk from the cafe instead of normal milk which made it taste weird so I loaded it with pepper to cover the weird milk taste), I watch some Ramsay. When my mac and cheese and tv time ends, I look up at the room and realize it is not my mom's room, the room where I would normally watch Ramsay's shows. I kind of miss the unnecessary commentary my mother usually gives while watching reality shows. After daydreaming about home, I return back to write my final essay. Ugh, ya it's not all fun and games. I have to write essays and journals too.

On another note, I ran into our head coordinator/boss/go-to-person today and she is organizing a farewell party for us. You know time is running out when you have final papers to write and farewell parties to attend.  : (

June 11; who needs tv when you've got the internet

Day 127
Patio dinner with a few of our favourite friends =)

It turns out that Tanjin and I are not the only ones who watch HBO's True Blood. With the North American season premiere yesterday, we had a little True Blood viewing party with a little help of Tanjin and her magical internet powers. Who needs tv when you've got the internet!

I usually watch tv by myself just because of show preferences, but it's so much more exciting when watching it with other people - reactions, commentary, afterthoughts...

June 7; SNL thursday

Day 123
We were missing a lot of members of the Dungeon and Dragon group, so we watched some of John's favourite things/whatever was on his laptop instead

Kenny and Spenny - It's actually a Canadian comedy show where 2 guys who are complete dorks do stuff every episode. Stuff as in: who can stay in the haunted house the longest, who can wear a dead octopus on their head the longest, who do gay guys like more, and other randomness. It's ridiculously stupid/humorous.
annnd SNL.

It's all these little things which makes me enjoy living with friends so much. But I do wish we had a proper lounge with sofa. oh gawsh, I miss sofas.

June 5; Dungeons and Dragons cont'd

Day 121
After a day of intense journal writing and ill behaved students, an escape from reality was what I needed.

The crew continues to move forward on their journey to Årkiva. The gang has been walking straight for a while. They do not hear or see anything of interest. Eppy tries to talk to the trees, but fails to hear anything. Finally, they see a bridge from a distance. As they begin to close the distance to the bridge, a troll appears. Battle time! Eppy herself is not as useful as her owl, who pokes the troll the eye. Camino’s slaps fail to have any effect on the troll and accidently stabs Mance Rayder with his corkscrew/dagger instead. [Angel rolls a D20 and gets a really low number] The others do a fine job fighting off the troll and Godric successfully pushes the troll off the cliff. Atticus the cleric heals the damaged members of the team and the group continues on. While Camino searches one side of the bridge and finds some random items and silver (currency), Eppy searches the other side and does not find anything useful.  They continue walking until dusk arrives. They find a place to camp out.  Eppy and Camino go into the woods for a shower. On their way back to camp, they spot a caribou. Camino successfully shoots the caribou providing 3 extra days worth of rations for the gang. [Angel rolls the D20 and gets a high number].

The next day, the gang arrives at the abandoned port town, Årkiva, just as the sun is setting. They see a local moving and he tells them there is find there is something fishy going on. They begin to search the houses for some clues before dusk, but find nothing of use. There is a church that stands tall in the middle of the town. As the gang moves closer towards the church, the scent of fish gets stronger. Inside, Mance Rayder successfully moves the ginormous stone aside to reveal a secret staircase. There are distinct marks on staircase that resemble claws. It also looks like it was built from the ground up. [It is because some members of the group have special skills that we are able to get that kind of information.]

Just as things start to heat up, we realize how much time has passed and we end for the night.

June 4; and tonight, we play Dungeons and Dragons

Day 120
Our dungeons and dragons session was looong overdue. We finally got around to play it and it was sooo much fun! All you need is your imagination...an awesome set of dice...pen and paper...and a group of friends who actually want to play with you. But you have all the basics, you an go on for hours without noticing the time.

John is the dungeon master. We're playing in his imaginary world where he sets up the tasks, villains, and main plot. So him guiding the characters, here is where we are at so far:

So the story begins at Camino’s Tavern on the outskirts of the village of Dale. It’s a glum and rainy day. These are the best kind of days for Camino’s striving bar. The usuals come in to escape the poor weather and their less than adequate lifestyles.  Travelers of all sorts come in for temporary shelter. The exhausted ones can recuperate with an overnight stay at the inn above the bar. Groups are tucked away in their own spaces, minding their own business. At the bar Godric, Camino’s closest comrade, scans the area. A group of bards sit around the fire place illuminating the room with soft melodies. A gang of drunk barbarians sit around a table making a ruckus. An aasimar sits alone in a corner nestled with her owl. There are customers of all sorts, however Godric finds interest in a particular one. This special individual has spectacular dreadlocks and smooth honey coloured eyes(from Camino’s perspective) and is undeniably handsome (from Godric’s perspective). A group of men walk into the bar drenched in rain with hoods covering their faces. The calming melodies from the bards dies out and murmers fill the air. Mance Rayder (Heys) listens in on the mysterious men. He hears that things have been happening in Årkiva, a fishing town nearby Ülfstrad. The overly intoxicated barbarian puts his beer down, stands up, and announces his plans of travelling to Årkiva to find out more. [Heys roles the D20, a dice with 20 faces, and gets a natural 20 which means that he is successful in whatever he intends to do. In this case, people listen to his plans]. Now that everyone is aware, chatter fills the room. Enepsigos (Sigrid), the aasimar, befriends Mance Rayder and they plan to travel together. The noise only gets louder. The tavern may be an escape for other people, but it is not an escape for Camino. He sees this as an opportune moment to escape. Camino (me) approaches Mance Rayder and tells him to bring down the ruckus. Godric (Tanjin) finds Mance Rayder’s drunkenness and attitude repulsive so he puts a sword to his neck. People start to start. The last thing Camino wants is a bar fight so he tries to calm his friend. People start to react. Antares (Kristie) plays music and a calming song sweeps across the room restoring peace. It looks like Mance Rayder successfully forms a crew. After a brief meeting with Camino’s ill mother, Camino regretfully leaves the bar in the care of his dimwitted cousin, Oliver. As Mance Rayder, Enepsigos, Camino, Godric, Atticus, and Antares assemble outside the tavern, a man pokes out of the sea. The mayor offers 100 duckets for information from Årkiva. Mance Rayder [Heys rolls the D20 and gets a high number] successfully bargains for a better reward: 200 duckets. With the deal sealed, the motley crew embark on their 3 day journey to Årkiva. After walking for hours, the group notices the setting sun. Enepsigos tries to use her tree talking skills to pick up on clues but hears nothing but the sound of trees swoshing in the wind [Sigrid rolls the D20 and gets a really low score]. They find a place to camp out for the night and Mance Rayder ventures into the woods to get some firewood. En route, he encounters some wild men. Goal: defeat the wild men! [If you’ve played any RPG game before, it was probably based on D&D. Everyone takes turns, hit points vary depending on what you roll and the skills you have, attributes, weaknesses, etc…] Atticus realized his armor is too noisy and counter effective in the battle with wild men, so he decides to takes it all off. A brave move that was. The gang successfully kills the wild men and return back to the camp for the night. The group will continue their journey at sunrise.
[Recover hit points, minus one day's rations/food]

May 31; fighting off the end

Day 116
It's the last day of May and we're coming to an end.
Most of our extra curricular classes, like kung fu, calligraphy  and paper cutting had already ended. It was our last Mandarin class today and we ended with watching the movie Ip Man. The story takes place in China  during the Japanese invasion. The movie is actually based on a true story and the hero of the story is actually the mentor of Bruce Lee. So it's a bit of history, biography, and a lot of action.  It won some awards, so it must be good right?  I thought it was an alright movie, not exactly my cup of tea (i prefer rom-coms).
Jeeze, I can't believe it'll be June tomorrow.

May 29; dinner with Juno

Day 114
As a small token of my appreciation for all the hard work my girls did for my surprise party, I made them dinner.
Photo Cred: Tanjin
and then we watched Juno (one of my all time favourite movies).
I love the ease of dorm life.

May 28; Failure to Mail

Day 113
After 113 days, I was finally getting around to mailing my postcards. With everything written out nicely and addressed, all I was missing were the stamps which I had to buy at the post office. There's something called China Post and so we mistakenly thought that it was a post office. APPARENTLY, it was a bank. Then where the hell is the post office??? I was hoping my postcards would make it to Canada before I could.  Ugh, we gave up for the day and found a bakery to eat away at our feelings.

We continued to eat away at our feelings and then ended up having a movie night to help brighten the dampened day because China was frustrating us again. Tanjin's Choice:
I'm a sucker for chick flicks.

May 8; broken mug, wilting flower

Day 93

Unfortunate news: My Korean "fighting" mug broke last night. = (
Coincidentally, my friend called to arrange plans to make a trip to IKEA this weekend to get stuff for his new apartment   so I figured I could get a new mug there. Although my Chinese-Swedish mug won't be the same as my Korean one = (

But on the brighter side, the weather in Beijing had been getting a lot nicer. The greenery around the school is proof of that. Today, one of my students gave me a flower:
already wilting : (
Kids are just so darn thoughtful without even knowing it.

May 5; Happy Half Birthday Tanjin and Heys!

Day 90
The most talked about event this week had finally arrived: Tanjin and Heys half birthday!
People were soo ready to eat Indian food, drink, and sing. (Mmmm, those are a few of my favourite things!)
But before the celebrations began, Kristie, the birthday girl, and had a little pre-celebration with Chris Hemsworth and a hair straightener... i.e. we watched Thor and played with Tanjin's hair. *Thor was so good, I can't believe I hadn't watched it before.
Let the night commence!
We got that pre-prom feeling
