March 30; The Friday Routine

Day 54
Last week we broke our Friday routine/ritual for a special lunch with our classmates and teacher. This week, we stuck with it. So, what’s the routine?
We go to class, where we discuss stories, I translate random English sentences to Chinese, and I learn stuff about China. Something interesting I learned this week was that all Chinese students go through mandatory basic military training once they reach the age of 18. There is no way to get out of it and it’s a part of their education. Students are shipped out to the middle of nowhere where they wake up at 5:30 every morning to do drills to improve their “endurance.” The food is nasty and tasks includes marching, chanting, and standing outside in the scorching hot sun for three hours. It you move (even to wipe your sweat) the drill sergeants can and will punish you. What’s punishment? Another three hours in the sun.
Also, for those of you wondering if Chinese students know about American shows like Big Bang Theory, Gossip Girl, and even Jersey Shore…the answer is yes. They are aware that such shows. Not as sheltered off from the rest of the world as you thought.
After class, we go to Macker’s (what the Aussies call McDonald’s) to fuel up for the shopping spree at the Zoo Market.
CURLY FRIES!!!!! bring curly fries to Toronto!!
My theme this week was silky, floraly summer clothes.
cotton, strapless summery floral dress
Asking price: 39RMB
Buying price:  30RMB
silky summery floral print dress
Asking price: 39 RMB
Buying price: 30 RMB
In addition to the start of my summer clothes, I got a airy blouse and this scarf. You see, in between winter and summer, there’s a season called spring. In China’s version of spring, the winds are gusty and the floors and dusty which creates sandstorms and annoyance. I decided to use a scarf instead of rocking the hospital mask to protect my face from Beijing dirt.
To end off our Friday night, we had dinner with our foreign teacher friends.
And that is basically how every Friday goes down.

March 9; The Zoo Market: Part II

Day 33
For the comparative literature class I’m taking, I need to go somewhere with my group to conduct some sort of Chinese cultural research. Personally, I wanted something underrated and hidden. With the help of Professor Geng, our group decided to conduct our research in Songzhuang, an artist’s village. Apparently, artists live here and you can knock on these artists' doors to check out their art. This attraction is so hidden that my Chinese group members haven't even heard about it. I’m very excited about this.
The first time we got more than one seat together on the subway. Definitely a photo moment
To prepare ourselves for the Zoo Market, we got lunch at Mackers (as the Australians would call it).  I haven’t had a burger from McD’s since forever because I got food poisoning from McD’s when I was a kid. I used to only eat their fries, pies, and McFlurries… but looks like Asia has once again changed me... I'm still eating their fries and pies and now their fish sandwiches. Yumm?
After two-ish hours of shopping, I came back with:
Polka Dot dress/top
Asking Price: 39 RMB
Final Price: 30 RMB
White lacey top
 Asking Price:  29 RMB
Final Price: 25 RMB
Random purchase of the day: Stripped tank top = 5 RMB

While we were waiting for the other foreign teachers, Catherine and I decided to explore the WDK area. In one of the many places to eat, there was a menu that caught my eye and left my brain confused.
really bad translations...
We decided on middle eastern food and so I had my first taste of Falahfel (and surely not my last). Falahfel is a Middle Eastern restaurant with falafel, sheesha, and Middle Eastern people. Pretty legit.
There were a lot of delicious looking things on the menu. Including a plate of homos.
I just went for a plate of falafels. A delicious snack.
Falafel = 35 RMB

While we were two ladies short afterwards, the rest of the gang went out to La Bamba’s, a tex-mex restaurant/bar to get student cards. This student card is magical – eggplant sandwiches for 10RMB (less than $2 CND) on Wednesday, veggie sandwiches for 10RMB on Friday? This is my place!
When John ordered the card for us girls, the waiter gave Tanjin and Sigrid their cards, but where was mine? I had to ask again. Being a visible foreigner can have its advantages sometimes.

March 4; Shopping Therapy: The Zoo Market

Day 28
Tanjn and I taught our first class together. All I can say is I like team teaching.

The girlies made our way to the zoo market - a multistory building full of clothes, accessories, cosmetics, and handbags. It was sooo overwhelming. I was not planning to buy anything until much later in the trip/after we visited all the markets. After seeing the cheap starting prices and the less aggressive shopkeepers, I had to buy something. After going down one lane, I started to make a wish list (of product, store number, and price) of what I wanted. The reason I made a list was because many stores were selling the same things so I just took note of the store with the cheapest prices. As we went up and down each lane, my list grew and grew until we had an hour more until closing time.
At the end of my trip, I came back with this:
Stripped navy cardigan
Asking price: 39 RMB
Final price: 35 RMB
...
Black and gray light coat = 39 RMB
Blue shirt with belt
Asking price: 29 RMB
Final Price: 25 RMB
Pink lacy cardigan
Asking price: 39 RMB
Final price: 35 RMB
Nail Polish = 5 RMB
Random purchase of the day: socks = 1 RMB

We met up with the others for dinner at a Japanese curry restaurant in WDK.
Tanjin loves her fried chicken.
Croquettes and veggie curry = 42 RMB
Can't wait to head back to the market after class next Friday!!

Jan 10; first day of classes and first shopping trip!

There are so many things I'd like to say but to save you the trouble of reading my blabbering, I have tried to make things short and sweet!

Day 2

In case you were wondering how my regular day school schedule is like...

1:00 - 4:00 - Tae Kwan Do
4:00 - ??? - explore! (my favourite time of the day)

Fully loaded T.V. with like 300 channels (I really like the mnet one with kpop)

There are actually 4 fridges.

14 students
2 teachers -who are so well dressed and just so cute and happy!
1 freezing cold classroom.
funfunfun.

I did not start tae kwan do yet, but I did let the instructor/class know that I've got a horrible immune system/accident prone (i.e. nothing too intense please). Ordered the uniform!

On today's menu:
For lunch, we ventured off to the wonderful food stall! I originally wanted to buy tteokbokki, so I asked the guy if it was very spicy. He kindly gave me a sample and indeed it was, so I decided with deep fried shrimp and sweet potato. I will try tteokbokki once my tummy feels better though!
Inside the bag we have some skewers, sesame oil, and my food!
shrimp and sweet potato
delicious!
 5 pieces of mixed vegetables/shrimp = 2500 won

For dinner, we ate at a non-English speaking restaurant with a name I cannot read...YET. Upon arrival, we noticed the menus were all in Korean and there were no pictures, so I thought it was time to make legit use of my phone (I've only been trying to get WiFi, but it hasn't been working). I used my phone app to ask the waiter for an english menu and so dinner was saved.
udon, cucumber, seaweed, egg, soup
Bowl of noodles = 4500 won

After debating on whether to hit the palaces or market after class, we decided to head to the Namdaemun Market with some of the Aussies in our program.
Happy Store makes us happy!
YAY First asian celebrity! (Kim Hyun Joong)
angel? angel!

Sooo what did I buy after an afternoon at the market? Here's my market haul!

+ they gave me a free face wipes with Kim Hyun Joong on the box!

I also bought new glasses for about $70 CND!!  They gave us all little yogurt soft drinks while we were waiting and Young (the guy helping Cat and I) spoke great English as well.

To sum it up: I could get use to this.
